此片是艾未未在看到“海滩上溺死的难民小男孩”新闻后决定着手拍摄的纪录片。探访了世界各地的难民营和难民群体，通过与难民营的人们一起居住、生活，试图展现现实中难民们茫然的生活状态：有希望，有绝望，有暴力、有抗争，也有空洞和丑陋。人的价值在这里大概是趋近于零。没有什么可以完成的，只有无尽的等待和忍耐，焦虑与抑郁。
