A young woman wakes up in a cheap motel, covered in blood, next to a dead body with no memory of the previous evening. Scared out of her mind, she attempts to put the pieces back together, trying to remember the horrors might have happened.

Ruth Butler, a clerk in an emporium, marries Jimmy Rutledge and thereby greatly displeases his mother, the owner of the emporium, because of Ruth's lowly origins. Renaud Graham, one of Mrs. Rutledge's friends, becomes interested in Ruth, forces his way into her apartment, and attempts to make violent love to her. Jimmy walks in on their embrace and, suspecting the worst, leaves Ruth. In the family way, Ruth finds refuge in a boardinghouse where she meets Al Bryant, an aspiring writer. A young man happens upon a strange, isolated village which is oppressively ruled by foreign soldiers. When he tries to inquire into what is going on, he is forced to flee to an island where a renegade medical doctor tries to force him into submission.
