故事设于1950年代末，女主角丽塔毕业在即被派往电车厂工作，了解劳动生活。在那里，她爱上了比她年长十年的化学家。可惜好恋不常，男朋友因事业失意决定投奔西柏林，令丽塔进退两难。禾斯夫用上前卫的意识流手法，以倒叙方式道出丽塔的经历，藉以对共产理念与实行提出大胆的批判，此片亦因此被誉为“第一部呈现东德觉醒的作品”。

本片内容描绘日本歌舞伎界中严酷的演艺生涯，以及女性为爱而自我牺牲的悲情故事。是沟口『一镜一景』表现形式的起点，启用的男女主角均来自舞台剧演员。女主角森赫子较长于花柳章太郎，沟口也不做掩饰，是极力以「写实」风貌呈现。本片依据当时电影法被选为优秀电影奖，也是第一届文部大臣奖作品。

This movie was to be as absurd as Antfarm Dickhole, but Bill Zebub’s research inspired new story ideas. This will still be an unusual tale, but it will be a bit deeper than planned. Then again, Bill Zebub usually adds deeper levels for those who want to explore. It might be safe to call this a spoof of occult horror. That was the original idea. It is more than a parody however.
