本片是继《爱迪·奥特曼》后10年来所制作，平成时代的首部奥特系列作品。在澳大利亚拍摄完成后，先是在1990年以家庭录像和镭射影碟的形式播放 。 除了第1集开头对于超人葛雷于人类未知之地进行战斗的描绘等，为了导出超人的神秘性，因而并未提及他与过去的奥特兄弟之间的关联（仅在日语版主题歌的歌词中提及），但设定上仍是将葛雷视为M78星云・奥特之星的超人战士，及宇宙警备队的队员。 即使整部剧集的基础上沿袭了昭和时期作品的模式，但而在内容则将主题聚焦为环境和生态保护，并进一步为剧集带来一大创新。 故事当初，葛雷是与骼迪斯细胞所产生的怪兽战斗。而登场怪兽当中也有部分仅为遭到骼迪斯细胞所附身，原本并非凶恶的怪兽，因此最后葛雷并未将其击倒。第7话之后，则是开始与因人类破坏环境所出现的怪兽战斗（同以往奥特系列的路线），这样的内容变化，则是因为本片当初的企划原本仅到骼迪斯篇为止，后来在开始制作前才决定延长之故。 亚瑟队长的日语配音，是由初代《奥特曼》剧中饰演村松队长的小林昭二担任，旁白（1～6集，第7集起改为声优内海贤二）则起用了在《假面骑士》中，与小林有合演之缘的藤冈弘。此外本作的大部分的特摄场面，使用了能够充分发挥澳洲地理优势的开放布景，在许多场景利用自然光下的摄影来表现巨大的感觉。
